A Beginning

I think I said earlier that this blog would appear both on my web site and Blogspot; it will be interesting to see where the hits come from. In any case, the process has begun! I spent the past couple of days cleaning out my studio and bringing some order into chaos. The subject is an old one - I did a small (8x12) field study a year or so ago but never enlarged it. My first inclination was to do something like a 30 x 40 but one of my galleries asked for some smaller pieces so this will be an 18 x 24.

The last two days have been very warm and the urge to hit the road in search of fresh subject matter is strong. I was re-reading about the spring and summer painting "campaigns" of some of my favorite artists from the late 19th and early 20th century. They would leave their big city studios and head for the country, the seashore, or the mountains, for weeks at a time. They would fill sketchbooks and small panels with ideas to take back into the studio to prepare for the fall art season. My trips are shorter, just three or days at a time, but the end results are the same; good ideas for fresh studio paintings.

One of the art business items that I am looking at is self-published prints. I have had test reproductions done several times over the past ten yeas but I was never pleased with the way my works translated from the original canvas. I have had enough requests for reproductions recently to cause me to re-evaluate the possibility. If the new ink-sets look good then I'll look at a late fall or winter introduction, possibly in an on-line venue. I'll keep the blog running on this item.

Why the blog

I am in the process of examining my entire artistic work process, from what I paint to how my paintings are sold. My web site has been a good tool for me but I felt I needed a way to get in better contact with people who are interested in my work or who have purchased a painting. I have begun a blog on my web site (www.jackcaytonartstudio.com) that will parallel this blog so check out either one to follow my journey.

Creating a blog

I have procrastinated too long over the "to do" or "not to do" regarding a blog. Facebook is still an open question but I need the blog to compliment my website so this is a new start for www.jackcaytonartstudio.
